Thoughts on Top Gun: Maverick

Is it finally okay to say that Tom Cruise is the best action star of all time? I’ve been waiting this long. I can wait longer. Let me know when everybody finally gets there. I’ve spoken about the legacy sequel craze before and every time I come into one I…

Thoughts on C’mon C’mon

For as long as I can remember I’ve always been obsessed with memory and keeping memories. It was really important to me when I was a kid to try and keep these snapshots in my head. I was a very nervous child and I really hated forgetting stuff, if you know me in real life you will also know this hasn’t changed one bit. — When asked about C’mon C’mon I told people it’s “about” an uncle taking care of his nephew for maybe a month or two while his mom helps out the kids’ dad. That’s what’s happening in the movie but is that what it’s about?

Michael Mann and Death

There are two filmmakers that have influenced not just the way I write but the way I indulge in art. Those two are Michael Mann and Douglas Sirk. Very similar filmmakers I know but let that be an insight into my brain for you all. For a long time, I’ve…

Thoughts on Scream (2022)

The first Scream is one of my favorite movies of all time. It stands as an incredibly interesting piece of social history. Before Columbine, the way two boys would terrorize a student body was put on a scary mask and slash people up like they were the villain in a…

Thoughts on Blue Bayou

For as long as I can remember I always thought motorcycles were really cool. I can’t even ride a bike so the idea of me getting on one is ludicrous and hilarious. My failures are beside the point. There’s just something so American about riding your iron horse through the…

Catching up on Classics: All That Jazz

“Man cannot endure his own littleness unless he can translate it into meaningfulness on the largest possible level.” — Ernest Becker I sometimes forget how fun it is to watch a truly great movie. Like capital “G” great. Pretty much everyone I know has said that All That Jazz is amazing and given it near-perfect rating on various websites. So this was pretty anticipated for me. Yeah of course this movie…

Thoughts on Stillwater

God this crow tastes delicious. All of the trailers I saw for Stillwater just made it seem like “American guy goes to a foreign place to solve his external issues and that also solves his internal issues.” …

Thoughts on The Green Knight

Surprisingly, I don’t know much about Arthurian Legends. If you know me you would think that’s right in my wheelhouse seeing as I had no friends and was obsessed with myths for a large portion of my life. …

Pieces of a Woman Review

x Allow me a moment to become absolutely insufferable and talk about genre theory. Genres evolve in four phases. They go primitive, classical, revisonist, and parody. A primitive Melodrama might be something like “Four Daughters” where we can see all the trappings of a genre but all of the pieces…

My Two Favorite “Christmas” Movies

Okay so maybe I don’t know what Christmas movies are but I’m Jewish so give me a break. The two movies that make me think of Christmas the most OR encapsulate how I feel about Christmas are “Inside Llewyn Davis” and “All That Heaven Allows.” Allow me to explain. Every…
